Karlsruhe – Wibu-Systems AG, a leading German manufacturer of hardware based protection solutions for software, documents, access and media, announced today their latest patent combining a high level of security with flexible license management for all vendors of software and digital content. The new technique is helpful for representing a trouble-free varity of license models requested by the author.

The United States Patent & Trademark office awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,143,297 on November 28, 2006, entitled “Procedure for the protection of computer software and/or computer-readable data as well as protective equipment”. It allows the secure transfer of licenses that belong to one or several authors. This mechanism offers advantages for vendors and users at the same time: the author can program the license hardware called a CmStick or extend an existing CmStick with his data so that it can be reprogrammed remotely only by the author. The CmStick is especially valuable for the user because the CodeMeter combined licenses can be stored by different authors in to one single hardware and so it is possible to abandon the necessity of using several dongles all provided by different authors. The license transfer happens comfortably with any – even unprotected – communications. The licenses will be stored in the high security part of the CmStick, so they can be used on any mobile computer.
