School Meals in Haiti

The situation in Haiti is becoming increasingly dramatic. The rampant gang crime and violence of recent years has clearly left its mark on families and especially on children. Many families have had to leave their homes or have at least taken their children out of the danger zone around Port au Prince. But the supply situation is critical. In addition to education, access to regular meals at the schools run by nph and St. Luc is an essential element in helping to give the children a future. Many children come to class without having eaten anything that day. And for many, the school lunch is the only hot balanced meal they receive. As the saying goes, "An empty stomach doesn't like to study." ... that's true. But hunger has even more far-reaching consequences: Hunger weakens the immune system and stunts a child's development. Through the school meals program, a valuable contribution is made to give children the chance for healthy development and a better future.

Who is nph?

nph (nuestros pequeños hermanos – our little brothers and sisters) was founded in 1954 by Father William Wasson in Mexico, with a vision to transform the lives of vulnerable children in need. Since 1984, nph Kinderhilfe Lateinamerika e. V. has operated out of Karlsruhe, Germany, extending support across nine Latin American countries.

Through its comprehensive, child-centered approach, nph provides life-changing opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth, empowering them to rise above extreme circumstances. By fostering growth in every aspect of a child's life, nph supports young people in becoming self-reliant, compassionate adults who give back to their communities and inspire positive change.

In its 70 years of service, nph has provided a safe home for 20,000 children and facilitated scholarships for more than 16,000 young people, guiding them towards a future of independence and self-determination.
